2C TIMES HERALD, PORT HURON. MICHIGAN TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2001 Henderson works out with Padres; Knoblauch goes to left IN BRIEF FIGURE SKATING The Associated Press A new position could cure Chuck Knoblauch's throwing woes. A new team could help Rickey Henderson reach a few records. With all seven scheduled games in Florida washed out by hbbbh rain, the biggest DM CCD HI I news Monday was DflotDftLL the New York Yankees' decision to move Knoblauch from second base to left field and Henderson's minor league deal with the San Diego Padres. Knoblauch, who made 41 hours on Monday morning, general manager Kevin Towers said The rest of the team had the day off.

"I know there was a Rickey sighting," Towers said. Henderson is closing in on two major records. He is three walks short of breaking Babe Ruth's record of 2,062 and needs to score 68 runs to top Ty Cobb's record of 2,245. He also is 86 hits shy of 3,000. Henderson was ignored by teams all spring before the Padres, one of his many former teams, offered him a minor league deaL errors the past two seasons, spoke with a psychologist during the offseason and reported to spring training more than a month early trying to rediscover his arm's accuracy.

"It's just not happening now. I've done every possible thing," said Knoblauch, who has had throwing problems since 1999. "My teammates know that. Joe Torre knows that. The coaches know that.

And more important, I know that." He has made six errors in 14 spring training games, five on throws. "He needs to be comfortable split squad. If Knoblauch wants to get in a day of fielding practice and advice from outfield coach Lee MazzillL he might wait to play left until after Wednesday. But the move will be made sooner than later. "It's a lot less stressful here in March than if you do it in June," Torre said.

Henderson, the career steals leader who is closing in on other marks, agreed on a one-year deal that will pay him 5250,000 if he makes the club. Henderson was at the Padres' complex hitting for about 1 12 for me to be comfortable, and we're not there yet," said Torre, the Yankees' manager. "Nobody has worked harder than he has. There is nothing more he can do at second base that is going to make him a better second baseman. Maybe getting away from second base will solve second base." The move, which means Alfonso Soriano will take over at second, won't take place immediately.

Monday night's game against Detroit was washed out, and more rain was forecast for Tuesday, when the Yankees are scheduled to play a Houston Russian pair regain World winning form VANCOUVER, British Columbia It's as if Yelena Berezh-naya and Anton Sikharulidze never missed last year's world championships. Showing the same speed, power and style that carried them to world titles in 1998 and 1999, the Russians simply outclassed everyone to win the pairs short program in the World Figure Skating Championships. Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China, last year's silver medalists, were in second. Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier were third. Two-time U.S.

Detroit Tigers owner Mike Hitch is surprised by criticism that he hasn't spent enough money on the club. Before Sunday's spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Marchant Stadium, Hitch responded to off-season criticism of the club's disinterest in pursuing free agents.

"If it was a case of an owner who never spent, I could see it. I offered a guy $150-some million and it didn't work out, and then come back the next year and don't sign anybody and the reaction surprised me. I guess I'm a little naive," Hitch said, noting that he offered Juan Gonzalez an eight-year contract worth $150 million prior to the 2000 season. Hitch also said he'd stand by his track record of spending money on players. "I've always stepped up when it came to that," Hitch told the Detroit Free Press.

"I'd like someone to tell me when I didn't. I've got a lot of money invested in this sport. "I lost over $100 million just carrying the Tigers at Tiger Stadium." Hitch said Comerica Park which opened last season gives him the first chance since he has owned the club to "be a normal owner and run the team as a normal franchise after carry ing it for all those years." He said Comerica Park should help put him on equal footing with other teams. "There's no alibis now," Hitch said. "We'll see how the team competes from here on out there's no excuses." The Tigers and Yankees were rained out of their scheduled Monday night game.

The Tigers' team bus got halfway to Tampa before the Yankees called off the game. Jeff Weaver would have started, but he will be on the mound today against the Indians instead. The last time the Tigers faced the Indians, lefty Sean Runyan assured himself of a trip back to the minors when he walked three of the four batters he faced. In five games this spring, he had a 10.13 earned-run average. He was sent to Toledo on Friday.

But Runyan said Monday he doesn't plan to stay there long. "That was right up there as one of the worst games of my life," Runyan said. "I knew the second I came out of that game that I wasn't rea dy to pitch in the big leagues right now. I was trying way too hard to make an impression (on Manager Phil Garner), who's never seen me have any success. "No doubt I need time in Toledo, but I don't think I'm through pitching for the Tigers." overtime loss x-cimcfied playoff spot y-ci inchea division Sunday WINGS 6.
