The noun discernment describes a wise way of judging between things, or a particularly perceptive way of seeing things. If you can understand something that's somewhat hidden or obscure — if you figure out the themes of a confusing movie, for example — you're using discernment.
The qualities are grounded in the Church of England's Ordinals. There are six Qualities: Love for God, Call to Ministry, Love for People, Wisdom, Fruitfulness and Potential.
A discerning person uses good judgement and thinks things through before making decisions. A great part of discernment is having a calm mind when we are doing the discerning! Not overspending is being discerning. Refraining from saying hurtful things is being discerning.
It means “to understand or know something through the power of the Spirit. … It includes perceiving the true character of people and the source and meaning of spiritual manifestations” (Guide to the Scriptures, “Discernment, Gift of,” scriptures.lds.org).
Of the three aspects identified at the beginning of this study as core elements of discernment (reflection, choice and one's relationship to God) the last two receive the most emphasis, probably because in most cases, the outcome of the discernment was the central issue in terms of Paul's rhetorical strategy.
When that occurs, you should stop following the seeming consolation, because it's very likely to be a false consolation sent by “the enemy of our human nature,” to quote St. Ignatius.
