1 John reiterates the same message over and over and that is the message of the love of God.Last week I shared from 1 John 3:13 and pointed out that there is a lot of hate in this world. Which if you were to ask me, shouldn’t surprise us. Verse 16 talks about the exact opposite topic, the topic of love! 1 John 3:16 says,“This is how we have discovered love’s reality: Jesus sacrificed his life for us. Because of this great love, we should be willing to lay down our lives for one another.”

The world sends a lot of various messages on what love is and to many, it’s a temporary feeling, which is one more reminder of why you and I can not live by our feelings. Love is not a feeling, it’s a choice. You will discover true love when you have a revelation that Jesus made a choice to die on the cross for you. If it were just for you, he still would have made the ultimate sacrifice. He made this choice in order that you could enter into a relationship with him.

What Jesus demonstrated on the cross, the ultimate gift of love, he commands you to do too. If you are a believer in Christ you can do this because Christ’s love lives in you. Remember, you can only give away what you have. So, the deeper revelation you have of the Father’s love, the more of it you can give away. This is what Jesus has called you to do. Loving the people around you is the ultimate demonstration of the cross.

Jesus laid down his life for you so you could lay down your life to bless those around you. It is such a beautiful gift and such a reminder that it all goes back to love!!! How can you lay down your life today, just as 1 John 3:16 tells you to do?
