Why I Like Neil Gaiman (2024)

Fifteen years ago, my friend Dave recommended I read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. The first paragraph hooked me and is one of the best books I have ever read. Why are Neil’s works in a class of their own, and why is he my favorite author?

A basic example is his transformation of the classic Cinderella story into The Sleeper and the Spindle. The result was gripping, had exquisite artwork, and was executed well. What set this work apart was the flow. The words melted from one superb sentence to the next. I wish I could structure my words so well.

Books are all about story, and this is where Neil focuses most. His plots are unique, imaginative, powerful, and engaging. What is the secret ingredient? Neil’s imagination must be on a completely different level. He can conceive of an entire realm with an exciting and unique story. So, it is a guarantee that you will find something completely new when you read one of his works.

Neverwhere is another excellent example of his imagination. The plot interweaves between our known reality and a fantasy world underneath London. This book made me think and ask questions about what is real and what is not. Books that force you to think about your life and possibilities beyond what is real are always unique.

Neil’s grasp of English is outstanding. Each sentence is a precious gem that stands on its own. He never includes extra words, thoughts, or motives. This attention to detail allows the reader to concentrate on what is happening and forget about reading. Neil has the gift of being an excellent writer with a high standard of excellence. When I read other works, I see areas where I could improve. This was not the case in any of Neil’s books. Granted, I give my English/writing skills a letter grade of C.

This sense of excellence is apparent in all his endeavors. Neil never cuts publishing corners, has cheap promotions, throws around a pompous attitude, makes verbal attacks, or spews self-serving muck. This attitude marks a humble author whose only desire is to create. I deeply respect his love of the game.

Neil’s works inspired me to leap to being an author, specifically because of the high standard of story and quality. Someday, it would be nice to read a compliment about my books, like the ones I wrote about Neil. I will continue enjoying Niel’s works and learning from his examples until then.

You’re the best -Bill
