Introvert Guide: Affinity and How It Shapes a Drama Series Affinity is important for an actor or an actress in a tv series format. Affinity has three categories, dominant male affinity, dominant female affinity and connective affinity. A male dominant affinity pertains to an actor or actress whose features and real life personality (projected or not) appeals to a male viewing audience. The reverse applies for an actor or actress with a female dominant affinity. A connective affinity pertains to an actor or actress that appeals to both male and female viewers. Connective Affinity is useful when a network wants to build its based audience. It is hard to find an actor or actress who has this quality. What we usually see are actors or actresses with either male dominant or female dominant affinities. That is why we often have love teams or partnerships. In some cases, an actor with dominant female affinity thrives in romance dramas. While an actress with male affinity works well in romantic comedies. Maja Salvador of the series Nina Nino is an actress with a connective affinity. Plots that work well with her affinity are revenge plot, rescue plot and mystery plot. Action dramas deliver well with this affinity. I just read something in the news that really frosts my shorts. Sarah Paulson is a well-respected actress, and she's spoken out about her time acting in a Broadway show. It seems that another actress who had played the same role in an earlier production of the play took it upon herself to send Ms Paulson SIX pages of notes.The notes were comparing their two performances (with Paulson's coming in second.) The temerity!Only the director can give notes on an actor's performance. Never should they come from another actor, unless they're asked to give an opinion.When I'm coaching someone, they need to get direction and notes only from me. One one occasion a woman did something I'd told her not to. So I said "Why did you put that line back in?" She told me that her husband told her to do it. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗵*𝘁 𝘂𝗽 👇In 2009 I was rehearsing my own one man adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's Diary of a Madman.It told the story of a civil servant fixated on social rank and status.One day, he starts hearing a 'voice', and realises that his bosses lapdog is talking to him - and this marks the beginning of his descent into madness.As the gap between reality and his 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 reality widens, he takes greater and greater liberties to explain his situation.My adaptation took place in one single room.This meant that it could read as:• His Bedroom• His Prison• His Mind.At one point, he is dragged into an asylum, but he attempts to justify this transition,insisting he has been brought to Spain to be crowned King Ferdinand VIII.It was a crucial part of the show, where the divide between the rational and irrational was paper thin.As part of the transition, we decided that the character would trash the room.This would symbolise his fight with the doctors incarcerating him,but he could then 'interpret' it as his battle to seize the throne.To help the audience with this transition, I had the idea of taking an upturned table and writing 'Madrid' on it.But during the rehearsal, I misjudged how big the letters should be.And i only had room for the first three = 𝗠𝗔𝗗.𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄.For the director and later the audience, it created a moment of suspense when you wondered if this 'madman' realised his true situation.He writes the label 'MAD'.He contemplates it.And then writes 'RID' under it...demonstrating he is actually still completely lost in his fantasy.All very clever stage business.And all discovered by accident.So in Gogol - so in all things.If you start any creative project with no room for experimentation,You're cutting yourself off from the best results.Have you ever made a screw up a feature?#voiceover #acting #happymistakes -----------------🎙 Need an assured, relatable voiceover?🎙 Connect, DM me or check out my website link.🎙 Schedule a virtual coffee about VO? https://lnkd.in/edi8UpkY🔹 Check out my newsletter 'Lend Me Your Ears',covering performance and voice every month:https://lnkd.in/eV3eu_V5 🔹

The Big Bang Theory is one of the few shows that can be watched again with joy in my own personal opinion. This has got to be one of the greatest comedy shows showing the struggle of growing up and being different from everyone else.
