Police respond to shooting during graduation ceremony in downtown Albuquerque
Police said a graduation ceremony was taking place for Southwest Charter School when the shooting happened
Police responded to a shooting at the Albuquerque Convention Center Wednesday afternoon, May 8. It happened during a graduation ceremony for the Southwest Secondary Learning Center.According to the criminal complaint, 21-year-old Cristian Bencomo went to hug his step-mother, then allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the woman in the neck. Police said the shooting was not an active situation.The criminal complaint also says two bystanders held Bencomo down until police arrived at the convention center. The woman was the only person hurt in the shooting. She was taken to a local hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition, according to police.Albuquerque detectives tried to interview Bencomo and he declined to provide a statement.
