Jamaican Jamaican co*cktail Patties Recipe

INGREDIENTS

The Dough

  • 1\4 cup shortening
  • 1\4 cup margarine
  • 1\3 cup water (cold)
  • 1\4 teaspoon salt
  • 1\2 teaspoons curry powder
  • 2 cups flour

The Filling

  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 3\4 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1\2 cup beef broth (stock)
  • 1\2 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 beaten egg

PROCEDURE

The Dough

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees C (400 degrees Fahrenheit).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, curry powder and salt.
  3. Cut in margarine and shortening until the mixture looks crumbly.
  4. Add water and stir until the mixture forms a ball.
  5. Shape the dough into a log and cover it with a damp cloth until ready to use.

The Filling

  1. Melt margarine in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Saute onion until limp and translucent.
  3. Add the beef, salt, pepper, curry powder and thyme and mix well.
  4. Cook until the beef is evenly brown, stirring constantly.
  5. Add the breadcrumbs and stock and combine all the ingredients well.
  6. Simmer until liquid is absorbed. It should be moist but not watery
  7. Remove the skillet from the stove and preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

How to make the patties

  1. Uncover the dough logs and place a tablespoon of filling 2 inches apart on each.
  2. Moisten the edges of the dough with water and fold the log in two, covering the filling.
  3. Use your hands to close the air pockets, then slice your log into individual patties.
  4. Slice the excess dough from the patty.
  5. Crimp the edges of each patty with a fork to seal it and also to achieve the traditional patty look.
  6. Lightly brush the pastry with the beaten egg.
  7. Place your patties on a lightly greased baking sheet and poke tiny air holes on the side facing up.
  8. Bake in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees or until the pastry is golden brown.
  9. Remove your patties and serve hot.

You can switch out your filling with whatever you wish here are some ways to prepare other Jamaican patty fillings. Remember if these recipes include meat or seafood with bones, you must debone it before putting it in the patty.

Without doing this there will be bones in your patty which could be quite harmful to those trying to enjoy your food.

When Should I make co*cktail patties?

They are always a hit during co*cktail hour at weddings. They also make a great addition to kids' birthday parties and dinner parties.

What is Jamaican patty dough made of?

Jamaican patty dough is made from plain flour, curry powder, turmeric, butter, baking powder, water and salt.

What do Jamaican patties have in them?

Traditional Jamaican patties have ground beef, but over the years newer flavours have been added. Now, you can get many different flavours. Some of my favourites are:

  • Curried Chicken
  • Jerk Pork/Chicken
  • Vegetables
  • Shrimp
  • Lobster
  • Ackee
  • Soy
  • Fish
  • Curried Goat
  • Lamb

Patty companies have additions that can be used to personalise your patty a little further such as cheese, callaloo and bacon.

Why are Jamaican beef patties orange?

The distinct orange colour of the patty comes from the turmeric or curry powder which is added to the dough. The curry is not only used to give the patty a vibrant colour but also an incredible taste.

Are Jamaican patties baked or fried?

A traditional Jamaican patty is baked in the oven, never fried.

I’m sure you are ready to try out your new Jamaican co*cktail patty recipe at your next event, or even as a snack for the family at home, either way, I am sure you’ll enjoy it.
