14th February 2023 – (Hong Kong) The National Retail Federation predicts that total spending on Valentine’s Day will rise 8 percent to US$2.6 billion this year, making it the second-largest year on record. So, which country and region are willing to spend more money on Valentine’s Day?
According to a report by Statista, a data research organisation, Hong Kong is the city and region that couples spent the most on Valentine’s Day in 2021. Although it is a celebration introduced from the West, Hong Kong couples’ enthusiasm for the Valentine’s Day is no weaker than that of other Western countries, and the per capita spending was as high as 101 euros (about 848.46 Hong Kong dollars).
The following countries and regions that couples spent more were the U.K – 96 euros (about 806.46 Hong Kong dollars), Ireland – 92 euros (about 772.86 Hong Kong dollars), the United States – 87 euros (about 730.85 Hong Kong dollars), Italy – 84 euros (about 705.65 Hong Kong dollars), Switzerland – 75.5 Euro (approximately HK$634.25), Germany – Euro 71 (approximately HK$596.44). When it comes to buying Valentine’s Day gifts for their partners, men spent slightly more than women on gifts in most countries. For example, in 2021, the per capita spending of men in Hong Kong was 126 euros (about 1058.48 Hong Kong dollars), while the per capita spending of women was 77 euros (about 646.85 Hong Kong dollars).
