Best Sausage Gravy in the Instant Pot

I love making biscuits and gravy from scratch. It’s one of my favorite breakfast recipes because it’s easy to make, filling, and so tasty! My family loves this dish so much, I sometimes even make it as breakfast for dinner… and then they have the leftovers in the morning. It’s just that good!

What makes this Instant Pot Sausage Gravy Recipe so special is that it uses two secret ingredients and is ready in under 10 minutes. Just when you thought homemade biscuits and gravy couldn’t get any easier, it did!

Truly amazing!!!!!!

I can guarantee your family is going to love this recipe for sausage gravy. Mine asks me to make it at least once a week!

Sausage Gravy and Biscuits Ingredients

My recipe for southern sausage gravy uses ingredients you would expect, like butter, flour, and milk, but it also uses a few special ingredients that make it stand out!

  • Sage breakfast sausage: I use ground sage sausage to make my homemade sausage gravy recipe, and it is beyond delicious. The amount of flavor it adds is unreal! You could use another type of breakfast sausage if you prefer, but if you can, I highly recommend trying sage breakfast sausage.
  • Maple syrup: Yes, you read that right! I add just a little bit of maple syrup to my biscuits and gravy for a bit of sweetness. Try it – you will be shocked by what a difference it makes! That little bit of extra flavor adds so much to your typical sausage gravy recipe.
  • Steak seasoning: You can use any steak seasoning of your choice for this recipe, but I use Chicago steak seasoning. It has a nice kick to it that really complements the sweetness of the maple syrup and the flavor of the sage sausage.

I personally love the extra spice adding red pepper flakes gives my gravy. You might consider adding it when it’s done cooking just in case not everyone in your household does! It works just as well when you add it after.

How to Make Sausage Gravy

You have a few options for how to make biscuits to use with this Instant Pot sausage gravy recipe! When I make biscuits and gravy, I usually opt to use refrigerator biscuit dough. It saves a lot of time.

All you need to do is preheat your oven according to the directions on the dough packaging, and then start baking them before you make your gravy!

Because this Instant Pot sausage gravy recipe takes less than 10 minutes to make, you want to keep that in mind when baking your biscuits. Start baking them at least 10 minutes before you start making the gravy, so they’re ready to go once you’re done cooking.

That way, you can enjoy your homemade biscuits and gravy immediately, instead of having to wait.

Air Fryer Biscuits

Another great choice for making biscuits for sausage gravy is to make Air Fryer Biscuits. They’re crispy, flaky, and buttery, and hold up so well to the gravy!

I love these biscuits. Not only are they easy to make using refrigerator biscuit dough, but they’re ready in no time. Pair them with garlic butter sauce, and they’re delicious on their own, too.

FAQs

Can sausage gravy be frozen?

Yes! You can freeze our Instant Pot sausage gravy recipe easily.
Allow homemade sausage gravy to cool in the refrigerator in an airtight container with at least half an inch of space at the top. Because the gravy uses milk, do not leave it out at room temperature for over 1 hour.
Once it’s done cooling, transfer the air-tight container to the freezer. You can also use a heavy-duty freezer bag to store the gravy, if you need more freezer space. Just make sure to leave room for it to expand.
Freeze for up to 1 month for best results. Make sure to label the container or bag with the storage date!

Can sausage gravy be reheated?

Yes. Although you can reheat sausage gravy in the microwave, the best way to reheat it is to cook it on the stove over low heat. Pour just a little bit of milk in the pan with the leftover sausage gravy and allow it to heat through over low heat, stirring as necessary. Adding that extra bit of milk helps bring it back to its original consistency.

Can sausage gravy be made ahead of time?

Yes! Actually, I recommend you make this recipe the night before, as the flavor intensifies by the next day. Just heat it up in the morning on low heat in a saucepan, as instructed above. You can store sausage gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

What is sausage gravy good on?

Biscuits and sausage gravy is a classic, and it’s even better if you’re using air fryer biscuits, but you can serve your gravy with a variety of different foods!

Try serving sausage gravy with one of these other great brunch ideas:

  • Fried chicken or chicken fried steak
  • Homemade waffles
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Hashbrowns
  • Baked grits
  • Baked crispy potato wedges
  • On toast – especially using our Instant Pot French Bread
  • Serve it with eggs over easy or poached eggs, like we use in our Eggs Benedict Recipe. Runny eggs add flavor and extra protein!
  • For a big continental breakfast, serve crispy candied bacon with the eggs alongside sausage gravy and biscuits.

Just made this recipe today for brunch; my husband and I loved it! My gravy turned out darker than pictured, and I also got the burn message. But I did accidentally put in my steak seasoning before the recipe called for it though. Overall, really great recipe! Will be making it again and following the instructions more closely. 🙂

Hi, I’m afraid in might be missing something. It says up top that you saute and the cook on high pressure. The instructions only mention sauteeing. Thanks in advance!

I made this the other day and it was SO GOOD! Although I’m trying to eat more plant based so instead of the sausage, butter and milk, I used a vegan breakfast sausage, vegan butter and oat milk!
