Beelzebub (2024)

It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household!

–Mathew 10:25

Significance in series[]

"In the Beginning"[]

When Crowley goes down to Hell to give an update on Warlock Dowling, the supposed Antichrist, Beelzebub asks if Crowley has encountered any problems from "the Opposition", but Crowley reassures Beelzebub that they don't suspect a thing.

"The Doomsday Option"[]

In a flashback, Crowley gives Beelzebub his presentation on changing the M25's shape into the sigil Odegra, which means "Hail the great beast, devourer of worlds" in the Dark Priesthood of Ancient Mu.

"The Very Last Day of the Rest of Their Lives"[]

In a flashforward, Beelzebub serves as the judge at Crowley's trial, which ultimately ends with Crowley's (failed) execution. Later, Beelzebub stands beside Dagon as they rally the demons to fight against the army of angels. Beelzebub interrupts Dagon's rally because they can sense that something is wrong.

Back in the present, Beelzebub rises from Hell (as Gabriel descends from Heaven) to try to convince Adam Young, the actual Antichrist, to end the world and start the war between Heaven and Hell by telling him when the war is over he will rule the world. When Adam says he will not start the war, Beelzebub is startled and says they must go back down to Hell to seek further advice. Along with Gabriel, Beelzebub vanishes. Later, Beelzebub is present atCrowley's trial.

Personality[]

Beelzebub is portrayed as harsh and cold-hearted throughout season one, and the beginning of season two. The only time in which Beelzebub is actually seen smiling in season one is when them and Gabriel are trying to appeal to Adam to restart Armageddon, telling him that once the war is concluded, he will get to rule the world. During season two however, Beezlebub is shown to be much softer and more vulnerable. Their interactions with Gabriel show their gentle side, and they go from being portrayed as a cold and heartless ruler, to a happy little cinnamon roll. More or less.

Quotes[]

  • "When all of this is over, you're going to get to rule the world. Don't you want to rule the world?"
  • "Crowley. The traitor."
  • ”You find Gabriel for me, and you can have whatever your nasty little heart desires.”
  • “Where you are, my sweet, is forever my hell.”
  • "I didn’t collaborate with Heaven any more than Gabriel collaborated with Hell. I just found something that mattered more to me than choosing sides."

Notes and trivia[]

  • Neil Gaiman once joked in a Tumblr reply that Beelzebub's pronouns are "Probably Zzzzzzir.", though has later suggested he doesn't "think there is a canonical answer", and that it's just "Lord Beelzebub", though the show uses they/them.
  • Beelzebub is a name derived from a Philistine god, who was worshipped in Ekron. Later on, this name became associated with some Abrahamic religions as a major demon. In Christian theological sources, Beelzebub is known as Satan and is considered one of the seven princes of Hell. In demonology, Beelzebub is associated with gluttony and envy. The Dictionnaire Infernal describes Beelzebub as a being capable of flying and refers to him as the "Lord of the Flyers" or the "Lord of the Flies".
