What kind of friend is Jesus?

He’s the kind of friend that cares deeply for our well-being. He’s with us through the messiest time of our lives and can handle the hardest questions we’ve got for him.

He’s also the kind of friend who wants to see us truly thrive on a deep emotional and spiritual level. He wants us to find fulfillment, joy, and abundance in the life he’s provided for us. Today, we’re meditating on a verse in the Gospel of John where Jesus’ true intentions are made clear as day.

👀Let’s look together.

𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝟏𝟎:𝟏𝟎
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭
The enemy has destruction on his mind
Jesus wanted us to have life, so he came to us
The life that Jesus offers is abundant

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞
Jesus, when I think about ______, I feel discouraged because it seems like death is winning.

What does it look like for me to experience a full, abundant life when I’m struggling with ______?

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬
Life-giver, give me wisdom for my relationship with ______ (name), who claims to know you, but who so often speaks in destructive and harmful ways.

Friend Jesus, please bring Christlike friends into my life that care deeply about my emotional and spiritual well-being.

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬
Lord, just as you came to bring life, as I ______ today, I want to do the same to each person I interact with.

I trust you to protect me from influences of death and destruction and to draw me closer to your way of life.

“The Lord has done it this very day;
let us rejoice today and be glad” (Psalm 118:24).

There is rest for the weary.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

In our wandering, He never leaves the place of conversation.

In our doubts, He doesn’t become bitter.

In our loss, He is making all things new.

In our anxiety, He is breathing peace in our frail lungs.

In our depression, He’s willing to wait until we’re ready to try again.

In our mistakes, He has excitement to teach.

In our thinking that we could do better, He remains the better.

In our longing for darkness, He leaves the porch light on.

In our need to seek, He is waiting to be found.

In our walking away, He waits.

He waits in longing.

He waits in prayer.

He waits in hope.

While we were a long ways off, He waits for our return.

With no pressure, and no condemnation.

And in our glorious repentance, as we take one step back towards Him,

He doesn’t wait.

He runs.

🏋️For some, hitting the gym, going for a run, or exercising is an exciting challenge. They love it! But for most people, working out feels like an obligatory and necessary drag.

Either way, God gave us human bodies and called them good. They are so good, that the Holy Spirit finds his home in us. We’re invited to take care of these Temples in which God dwells and to enjoy God’s good gift of movement.

So whether you are an “I love working out” person or a “Gyms are where happiness goes to die” person, this scripture meditation and prayer are for you.

𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭
Bodybuilder, who knit me together in my mother’s womb and designed these muscles, tendons, bones, and nerves, help me care for this temple in which you dwell. Help me celebrate the gifts of a body and movement, and help me develop strength to serve others. Increase my flexibility in body, mind, and spirit. Lead me away from comparison— to run toward your love. Help these hands and feet become your hands and feet to the world. Amen.

Your body’s been preparing for months, and now, your little one is finally here. Except, there are a few things you weren’t prepared for. Okay, more than a few.

You knew your hormones might cause “baby blues” the first few weeks, but something still isn’t feeling quite right. You want to soak up this time, enjoy the newborn snuggles, and get to know your baby, but it’s hard to muster up the energy to do anything beyond survive.

At your check-up they ask questions: Are you bonding with your baby? Do you struggle with anxiety? Is your mood constantly changing? Do you worry you aren’t a good mother?

These are met with questions of your own—do I answer honestly? Is this normal? How do I ask for help? What if I am a bad mom?

Postpartum Depression and Anxiety is the most frequent after-birth complication faced by women. While incredibly common, the experience can still feel isolating and terrifying.

It’s hard. And we know, in spite of the chaos in your brain, you love your babies more than anything. You don’t need to suffer alone—reach out to the community around you: your doctor, your friends, your church, and see what resources are available to help.

In the meantime, here’s a prayer and a scripture to cling to when the days and nights are long, and you’re waiting for deliverance.

𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
“Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?” (Psalm 42:5a).

𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧
Jesus, in your last hours, you ensured the care of your mother. Please, care for me now. You’ve blessed me with this new little one, but right now, I feel crippled by anxiety, exhaustion, and sometimes, anger. I want to feel the joy and beauty of this season, but instead, I feel alone. Remind my broken body of your body, broken for me. Pour into me your deep and abiding love. Reveal to me your light and truth when all feels hopeless. And, please Lord, send me tangible help to carry my burdens and to release these heavy loads. Amen.

*We’re not experts on depression. If you’re struggling, or if life just feels a bit out of control, consider contacting your OBGYN and seeking the help of a therapist or medical professional.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:8-10, ESV).

“Sometimes I think I’m more existential than a 26-year-old should be. I think about death and existence a lot— like, even before the Barbie movie came out, a lot. Not necessarily in a depressed way either, but in a realistic way. I haven’t always been like this. I used to proudly describe myself as a glass-half-full sort of gal, you know— an optimist. I guess I still am an optimist, but my optimism is now seen through a lens of realism.

I’ve been a realist for about a year and a half– basically since the death of my good friend, Chris. My husband’s best friend.” -Rachel Wierenga

Our entire world can shift in an instant: sudden death, diagnoses, the loss of a job… Where is God when our world is rocked by unexpected disasters? Read on to discover how Rachel learned to navigate existential crises after the heaviness of loss, and these lessons might help you, too.

Our bodies matter to our spiritual well-being. Not only did God create our bodies (and called them very good!), but God has placed his very own Spirit inside of us. Try this breath prayer with us.

If you’re reading this, you’ve likely tried to stop watching p*rn before.

Often we fail because we just “try harder” to be better. Instead, you need to understand the role p*rn plays in your life, and how sexuality is a good, God-designed part of you, no matter what your life looks like.

These first 3 steps will help you dig deep into your relationship with p*rn, and the last 3 steps (on our site) will help change your lifestyle so you can not only avoid sin, but live freely in Christ.

There’s no formula here. You can’t just strengthen your willpower enough to beat this. You need to be healed by Jesus, and amazingly, he invites you to join in this healing! None of these steps are “hacks”; they’re ways of inviting Christ into the deepest parts of you, so he can work tenderly and form you into someone who’s fully surrendered to him.
Ready? This summary only scratches the surface. We recommend reading the full piece on the web.

But get started with the first few:

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝘆
Explore your motivation for viewing p*rn. Notice things like your emotions, time, and place when you search for it. Finish this: “As I watch p*rn, I feel…” Maybe “desired,” “powerful,” etc. Here’s a secret: these are good feelings, but p*rn will never let you experience them in real, healthy ways. Now you’re uncovering when & why you may go to p*rn in the first place.

𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁
Next, ponder what you tend to search for. Think of what you type into your browser, & get curious about why. Maybe you’re trying to relive a memory, feel in control, or cope with your past. Now you’re identifying a deeper piece that starts to tell a story.

𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲
Ironically, shame actually keeps you in cycles of p*rn use by telling you that your struggle rules you out of having close relationships with God or others. Don’t let this lie affect your life with God. Even right after you give into temptation, go to him in scripture and prayer. He still delights in, loves, & forgives you.

🔍The next 3 steps will help build a lifestyle that makes room for God to transform your heart, mind, and body further. Visit the link in our bio.
